About Our Estradiol

Overview

Estradiol (E2) is largely produced in premenopausal women's ovaries in response to FSH and LH stimulation, and in men's testicles. In postmenopausal women, E2 is synthesized from E1. It is the most powerful estrogen and the one found in the greatest proportion in pre-menopausal women who are not pregnant. E2 levels in women differ depending on their age and reproductive status. They are an excellent indicator of ovarian function. Estrogens are a class of steroids that regulate the development and function of reproductive organs as well as the development of secondary sex characteristics in women. They, along with another hormone, progesterone, aid in the regulation of the menstrual cycle, the growth of the breasts and the uterus, and the maintenance of a healthy pregnancy. Though they are primarily associated with women, they are also present in men and play a role in bone metabolism and growth in both sexes. There are three estrogen components in the blood or urine: estrone (E1), estradiol (E2), or estriol (E3), the estradiol test evaluates the presence of E2 in the blood.
